ETS Adjustment Factor

Maritime shipping joined the European Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) from Jan. 1, 2024, as part of the European Union's (EU) “Fit for 55” package. The ETS initiative was introduced back in 2005 as a tool to reduce CO2 emissions.

ETS means that companies causing emissions will be taxed in relation to the amount of CO2 emissions. The idea is to get these organizations to work on reducing their emissions. The inclusion of the shipping sector in the ETS will take place gradually. In 2024, 40 percent of emissions will be taxed; in 2025, 70 percent; and from 2026, 100 percent of emissions. The associated cost of crossing to, for example, Great Britain and Scandinavia will be charged to you by Mainfreight as a separate surcharge from January 1, 2025.

Below is the surcharge as it would have been calculated for Q4 2024. From 17 December, the surcharge for Q1 2025 will be published here. We expect a significant increase in this as 70% instead of 40% of emissions will be charged from 2025 onwards.
